What are the best honeymoon destinations on the planet? It’s a question you guys ask me a lot and it’s a tough one!
The truth is that there are countless factors to consider.
Of course, it depends on your travel style and what you’re hoping to experience, but there’s one all-too-often-overlooked deciding element: timing. Aside from timing, if the biggest factor is finding a honeymoon that won’t break the bank, check out these budget-friendly honeymoon destinations.
This complete guide to the best honeymoon destinations for each month of the year will help you find the prime time for each location.
Planning note: There is a lot to consider here!
Prime weather often means crowds, while traveling during the low/shoulder season can save you money at the expense of predictably-perfect weather. This list is all about finding the perfect balance, so I’d encourage you to work with your partner to find the best fit for your perfect trip.
Without further “I-do” *wink*, here are the best honeymoon destinations in the world by month!
Best Honeymoon Destinations in January
Planning to honeymoon in January?
Whether you’re looking for a tropical getaway to escape the winter—like The Caribbean—or you want to embrace all the romantic cozy vibes of a winter holiday in the Swiss Alps, there are some great January honeymoon destinations.
Not sure what costs to consider? Here’s how to budget for your honeymoon!
Aruba, The Caribbean
What’s better than a suntan in the middle of winter? With the rainy season over, the Caribbean is in its prime for January honeymoons. Bring your flip-flops, your favorite bikini, and plenty of sunscreen for endless days in the sun.
The Caribbean is a far more diverse region than you might realize.
Browse the options in my ultimate Caribbean travel guide to pick out the best spot for the newlyweds with wanderlust, whether it’s Puerto Rico, the Bimini Islands, Aruba, the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, Havana, or sailing the British Virgin Islands.
Spotlight on St. Barts
Experience a taste of the Cote d’Azur in this swanky paradise.
After the New Year, this French overseas territory clears out and you can luxuriate in chic European-style resorts without jetlag. Bathe in the glow of Flamands Beach, shop the boutiques of Gustavia, then dine like royals at Bonito.
ROYAL MALEWANE IN KRUGER NATIONAL PARK, South Africa
Being based in South Africa for years, I found myself forever looking forward to January. This is peak wildlife migration season and it’s prime time in one of the world’s greatest safari destinations. Cape Town is also in the midst of summer and is, in my opinion, the most beautiful city in the world!
I would personally plan to spend 2-3 nights on safari then enjoy everything South Africa has to offer! Road trips are also one of the best ways to see the country whether it’s a week along the Garden Route or a day trip around the Cape Peninsula!
From lush rainforest to sun-soaked beaches, this is the perfect adventurous honeymoon destination for outdoor lovers. The sunny warm afternoons at the start of the year make it perfect for rafting, ziplining, or just soaking in the geothermal hot springs.
Eco-tours are a great option for exploring everything Costa Rica has to offer, or you can just hide away in the (surprisingly affordable!) luxury resorts on the sea.
Craving those cozy winter vibes? Pack your sweaters and hop on over to to Zermatt, Switzerland.
Located beside Matterhorn Mountain, this winter wonderland is perfect for skiing, snowshoeing, and long nights in front of the fireplace. Want to arrive like the power couple that you are? Hop in a helicopter for one of the most jaw-dropping vie of your life.
Of course, Zermatt is just one of the countless wonders of Switzerland and the surrounding region. Allow plenty of time to experience everything on offer in Switzerland, along with plenty of time for s’mores and snuggles.
Best Honeymoon Destinations in February
I personally love Morocco as a honeymoon destination, especially in February as it’s not too hot and it’s not peak season (meaning fewer crowds).
Ohe'o Gulch, Maui, Hawaii
I’m sure you already know that Hawaii is one of the best honeymoon destinations in the world. So, let’s dig a bit deeper. Maui, in particular during February, is where all of your tropical dreams come true.
La Mamounia in Marrakech, Morocco
This is another one of those places I find myself going back to time and time again. From the remote camps of the Sahara Desert to the bustling markets of Marrakech, this exotic hotspot has it all.
Want to take a deep dive and travel slowly? Explore Morocco by train to visit the countless wonders that dot the country or seek out the hidden gems in Morocco. While overnights in February will be chilly in the desert, the rest of the country experiences a refreshing break from the often intense heat.
TONGARIRO CROSSING, New Zealand
After traveling the world over, few places take my breath away like New Zealand does. This stunning country was made for adventure honeymoons, campervan road trips, hiking, and generally just enjoying the great outdoors.
Jardim Botanico, Brazil
Soak in the summer sun in February in Brazil. With Carnival in full swing, this South American gem is transformed into the party capital of the planet. Dance the night away with your spouse!
The parties of Rio are only a fraction of everything that Brazil has to offer. My Brazil travel guide will give you a glimpse into bucket list experiences and things to do. This southern gem is actually about the same size as the continental United States and every bit as diverse.
Whether you want to be in the center of the action or the heart of the jungle, you can have it all here.
Best Honeymoon Destinations in March
Entering spring, choosing the best honeymoon destinations by month is a real challenge. So many places are at their absolute prime. From the Maldives to Japan to Thailand — take your pick as these places are arguably at their best.
Meeru Island Resort & Spa, Maldives
Japan comes alive during the sakura season with cherry blossoms blooming around late March. They create an otherworldly beauty to this already incredible island! Explore Tokyo, of course, then dig deeper into the beauty of the countryside and beyond. Here are some of the best places to visit in Japan!
Planning Tip: Cherry trees blossom at different times every year and in different locations. Plan ahead and try to book your trip for the perfect moment.
Thailand is one of the best honeymoon destinations for couples on a budget. Go island hopping in Thailand to experience Southeast Asia at its best. The weather is warm and dry in March so you can explore without overheating or getting rained out.
Plan plenty of time for urban adventures, beach days, and deep dives into the local culture.
Best Honeymoon Destinations in April
Wondering where to honeymoon in April? Well, have you ever dreamt of Paris in the spring? While temps are still on the chillier side, and you’ll want a coat, now could be your chance!
Mandarin Oriental, Paris
When it comes to the best honeymoon destinations in the world, Paris would feature in nearly any list.
Sure, it might rain in April but somehow even soggy shoes are romantic in the City of Lights. Pack a spring jacket and come ready to snap shots of the cherry blossoms blooming all over this magical city.
And, be sure to grab my guide to traveling Paris on a budget. That je ne sais quoi doesn’t come cheap here, but you can see it all without breaking the bank if you have a few tricks up your sleeve.
It’s time to say “hola” to one of the most popular travel hotspots south of the border. Even if you have been dozens of times, Cabo is a great place for some romance and relaxation!
April is one of the best months to visit with beautiful weather. However, it can be busy with Spring Break crowds (depending on where you stay of course). March and May are also great times to visit!
Best Honeymoon Destinations in May
The weather starts to warm up in May and there are so many choices to pick from. Better yet, May is a great time as summer vacation hasn’t started for schoolkids, so typically, places aren’t as crowded.
Paris is far from the only European honeymoon destination. Get inspired with my Europe travel guide.
When it comes to top honeymoon destinations by the month, most of the continent is warming up.
Spain, Portugal, and Italy are great picks if you want to guarantee pleasant weather, though anywhere is a good option. For a dose of culture and history, round up a list of your ultimate bucket list destinations and discover a new world together.
Another place synonymous with romantic escapes, this Mediterranean wonderland ticks all of the boxes. From epic foodie delights and world-class wine to unforgettable sunsets, this is a destination like no other.
Hike Crete and soak in the culture. Eat your way across Santorini. If you’re a couple that likes to party, don’t miss the best beaches and parties in Mykonos. May weather will leave you with every option under the sun, and you’ll be there just in time to beat the crowds.
Find the best Greek islands for you, and start packing.
Dreaming of postcard beaches without the crowds? Head to Africa’s undiscovered seaside paradise: Mozambique. When it comes to luxury tropical escape, this place is second to none.
Arriving just after the wet season, you’ll be amongst the first travelers back to the beach. Explore the stunning Quirimbas and Bazaruto archipelagos before the packs of tourists arrive, then why not head over to South Africa.
PADAR ISLAND, Indonesia
With 13,000 islands ripe for exploration and plenty of affordable luxurious resorts, it’s easy to see why Indonesia is at the top of so many honeymoon wishlists.
Best of all, May marks the end of the rainy season so it’s the perfect time to beat the crowd and see a country at its best.
Cliffs of Moher, Ireland
The lush green countryside and thriving cultural centers of Ireland come alive in May. While you’ll need your jacket in the charming seaside towns, you’ll be rewarded with romantic castles and stately manors at every turn.
Best Honeymoon Destinations in June
Are you having a summer wedding and thinking about a honeymoon in June? Keep in mind the summer months are peak season for a lot of places—so do your due diligence with planning and be mindful of crowds and price hikes.
One of my favorite destinations on the planet, the otherworldly beauty of Iceland will make you feel like you’ve been transported to another galaxy. It’s simply unlike anywhere else you’ve ever been. And, in June, it’s better than ever.
As summer approaches, the days are longer and the weather a bit less arctic. While the Northern Lights will be nowhere to be seen, you will have perfect conditions for explaining the endless array of waterfalls, volcanoes, and lagoons—especially if you choose to drive the famous Ring Road!
This is a dream tropical honeymoon at any time of year. While you simply can’t go wrong during any month of the year, I especially love June in the Seychelles. This is when you’ll have the best chance to see whale sharks along the shore.
Explore my guide to the Seychelles and get ready to discover your new favorite island.
Home to the Serengeti and Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania was made for adventure honeymoons. During June, you can see upwards of a million charging wildebeests on a mission to get to Kenya.
Ngorongoro Crater is home to more lions than anywhere in Africa while Selous Game Reserve and Katavi National Park are essential safari stops. In fact, the natural wonders of Tanzania are endless.
Get up close and personal with the locals on a safari honeymoon then soak in the sun at the flawless beaches just off the coast in Zanzibar.
June and July are the peak months to travel to French Polynesia. Explore the wonders of the islands as this romantic wonderland springs to life.
I’ve had the privilege of visiting French Polynesia on three trips, exploring the islands of Bora Bora, Rangiroa, Tahiti, and Mo’orea. You’ll fall in love with the warm crystal crystal-clear seas and dreamy beach resorts. If you’re looking for a romantic paradise, you’ll find it here.
Best Honeymoon Destinations in July
When it comes to the best honeymoon destinations in July, things get tricky. This is the busiest time of year in many destinations. If you’re looking to avoid the throngs of tourists, you’ve got to plan carefully.
Vila Dora, Croatia
While Croatia can get busy, there are plenty of places worth exploring.
Soak in the history of Split and Old Town Dubrovnik. Take in the natural beauty of the Plitvice Lakes and Krka National Park, then take in the wonders of the countless treasures dotting this unique Mediterranean country — here are the best places to visit in Croatia.
Best Honeymoon Destinations in August
Growing up in California, I’m a bit biased as there’s really no *wrong* time to go on a California road trip… but, if I had to pick, August is pretty spectacular! The weather is good and most people have already taken their summer vacations.
For those planning a honeymoon in August, you may want to consider California, Scotland, or Sri Lanka!
Want to stay in the States? Here are the best honeymoon destinations in the US!
Big Sur, California
Hit the road in newlywed bliss. There are few things more liberating than taking to the wide-open road. And, there are few better places to do it than California.
Take a spectacular two-week road trip through California and find what the Golden State is all about. From the shiny seas to the thriving art communities to the bright lights of Hollywood, California is so much more than you think.
Kilchurn Castle, Scotland
In August, the weather in Scotland is as good as it gets. Search for the Loch Ness monster, wander through the lush gardens of the castles, and soak in the dramatic beauty of Isle of Skye.
Best of all, taking an August honeymoon in Scotland means having the opportunity to see the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
All too often overlooked by travelers captivated by India’s charms, Sri Lanka is one of Asia’s best summer honeymoon destinations. After exploring North Central Sri Lanka, Southern Sri Lanka, and beyond, I fell in love with this fascinating island.
When it comes to August in Sri Lanka, there is nowhere more beautiful than the East Coast of Sri Lanka.
The serene beaches of this region are at their very best in August. When you’ve had your fill of sun, uncover the local traditions and history in the Cultural Triangle. Made up of Anuradhapura in the north, Polonnaruwa in the east, and Kandy in the south, this fascinating path will show you a side of Sri Lanka you never knew existed.
Best Honeymoon Destinations in September
Once again, you’ve got your pick of the lot in September as the weather is good and you’re typically out of peak season for a majority of destinations (again, it’s all about timing it right with those school crowds!).
One of the most magical destinations on the globe, the distinctive regions of Italy are almost like countries in and of themselves. And, as the summer tourists pack up and go home (but the sun sticks around!), this Mediterranean gem is at its very best.
Another September European honeymoon destination at its very best, France is a top pick as locals return from their August breaks. The tourists are away, and you can see a more authentic side of France.
Make a beeline to the capital for a romantic Paris honeymoon, then dig deeper. The weather is lovely all over the country so get off the beaten path and find hidden gems in France. Sample the local vintages in Bordeaux. Wander the adorable towns of Provence. Fall in love all over again in France. It’s impossible not to!
Another one of the best honeymoon destinations in the world, the island of Hawaii is a year-round charmer. While you’ll find flawless weather (and premium price tags) 365 days per year, you will see a slight dip in traffic around September. As the kids head back to school, loved-up couples can enjoy some quiet time.
Whether you are sipping cocktails at the Four Seasons Hualalai, trekking through Volcanoes National Park, or taking a helicopter tour of Mauna Kea, this place will steal your heart.
Planning Tip: The islands are bigger and more diverse than you might think. Be sure to grab my Hawaii tips so you’re ready to hit the ground running.
Best Honeymoon Destinations in October
As you get into October, the weather starts to shift and you’ll find some places that are dazzling with autumnal hues. Have you ever considered a New England fall leaf-peeping adventure?
Just as impressive in autumn as it is in spring, Kyoto in October (and throughout November) is a time when the trees come alive again with stunning tones of yellow and red.
From wandering around the Gion District to visiting the many temples, you can explore from dawn to dusk and feel like you’ve barely scratched the surface. Or just soak in the natural beauty and unique culture as you dig into the local foods of Japan.
Just look at these gorgeous pictures of Vietnam, and tell me you don’t feel swept away to a land of romantic wonder! While it might not be the first place you think of when it comes to honeymoon destinations, maybe it should.
When it comes to a rich culture, amazing food, and gorgeous scenery, Hanoi can stand toe-to-toe with Paris. Best of all, Vietnam is at its very best during the warm days of November.
New England Fall Road Trip
Every year, the New England region receives heaps of tourism during autumn; and let’s just say there is a “reason for the season.” The colors are stunning, the cider is hot, and the views are unforgettable.
Are you looking to embrace all those autumnal vibes? This could be such a dreamy honeymoon, filled with cozy sweaters and tons of gorgeous fall hues.
It’s definitely one of the best United States destinations to visit in the fall and the surrounding area is ideal for leaf peeping!
The only caveat: predicting when and where the autumn leaves will change is quite tricky, so if you’re planning your New England honeymoon purely to peep the leaves—it’s best to give yourself a bit of leeway.
Typically, you can expect the leaves to start changing between mid-September through October depending on the state.
Best Honeymoon Destinations in November
When it comes to honeymoons in November, I would encourage you to look to places that will be warm… like Australia, which will be in its summer season!
Just as the land down under enters summer (but right before the Christmas wave of travel!), Australia is at its best. From Sydney to Melbourne to Queensland, it’s all ripe for exploration.
Wander the Daintree National Forest. Swim the Great Barrier Reef. Hike the rugged terrain of Tasmania.
Australia is way bigger than you think, so grab my Australia travel guide and arrive ready for an adventure.
Best Honeymoon Destinations in December
Hello, holiday season! As there are a lot of festivities in December, you may want to consider making the most out of them and doing a holiday cruise down the Danube River to visit some of the best Christmas markets on the planet.
If trekking with mountain gorillas is on your bucket list, Uganda (along with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo) are the places to do it.
December is dry season in Uganda making it a great time to visit so you can trek around without the rain.
A world away from everything you know and soaking in the wondrous beauty of Africa, you’ll know why so many couples flock to Uganda.
