The Caribbean is what tropical dreams are made of! The region is made up of the Caribbean Sea and 30 island territories but thousands more islets, reefs, and cays. Each island has a different influence and history, so I love that each destination in the Caribbean is so unique.
Some islands are known for their white sand beaches and resorts, while others are known for their scuba diving and fishing. You might also consider sailing from island to island to get a more in-depth experience and a glimpse of local life. I’ve visited quite a few Caribbean islands, and it’s hard to pick a favorite! You can travel these islands on a budget, or live in the lap of luxury.
February and March are excellent months for trips to the Caribbean. The weather is warm and sunny and it’s the perfect excuse to escape North America’s chilly temperatures.
If you want to spoil your partner, a lot of the Caribbean resorts also offer Valentine’s Day packages, and you’ll be around for Mardi Gras!
If you’re on a budget, May to September is low season in the region. You won’t have to look hard to find excellent deals on flights, and a lot of hotels slash their rates.
Accommodation: If you’re traveling to the Caribbean on a budget, hostels are few and far between. I’d suggest budgeting for 2-star budget hotel rooms that cost around $80 per night. Airbnb also operates around the islands, and it’s where I prefer to stay! You can find entire homes for as little as $50 USD if you’re lucky enough to snag a deal.
Transportation: If you’re staying on an island with a local bus service, you can expect to pay on average $3 per trip. Otherwise, you can take private taxis to and from your hotel. For getting between islands, you can either fly, or use the local ferry system in the Lower Antilles.
Cruises: Cruises are an affordable way to explore the Caribbean islands. If you keep an eye out for deals or you book far in advance, you can pay as little as $50 per day. The only downside is that you’re on a schedule and you don’t have that much time to immerse yourself in the local culture. You can also consider charting a catamaran with a group, and follow one of my British Virgin Island sailing itineraries.
