I would say Japan is also a great place to travel solo as a female.

I will second Japan! I spend half of my time in Tokyo and I’ve never felt safer anywhere, even my home country of USA. I never feel threatened or worry about anyone trying to take my bag or pick my pocket. In fact, I often will leave my purse unattended at a bar. I was just reading that 3 billion yen per year gets returned to people who have lost money in Japan. I even feel safe walking home at 3 AM by myself. Also, people are very helpful, often offering assistance, or if you ask for assistance, they will guide you until they know you have found your way.

I agree. For a solo, female traveler, Japan is a safe, clean place. I am Canadian and have traveled in Japan 4 times (soon to be 5 this fall!). In my experience, and on more than one occasion, when I’ve needed help with directions, a shopkeeper or clerk has left their post at the counter and/or store, gone outside to the sidewalk with me to point me in the right right direction. If you go to a Starbucks, you will notice locals search for a table first, then leave their purses, handbags, laptops, etc on the table and then go to the counter to order. It’s their way of making it known the table is taken. As well, if you forget something on a train like a camera or a phone, you will very likely get it back at the Lost and Found. Seriously.
