I think safety in places like Thailand or Bali comes down to what kind of traveller you are and how street smart you are. I probably would recommend going with a group for your first trip, keeping your appearance low-key (don’t flaunt wealth or be too loud or obnoxious, try to move around with confidence as scammers or pick-pockets will be trying for nervous, confused, lost or naive looking tourists where possible).
It is also super important to note that both Bali and Thailand have some no-joke laws, particularly around drugs. If you are someone who partakes in that kind of thing, you need to be aware that people can be and are arrested all the time for drug offences and the penalties are HARSH – think anything from decades in a local prison to death by firing squad. Do not use, carry or purchase any kind of drug in either of these places and I would recommend shrink wrapping and locking luggage travelling in these areas too, as it’s not unheard of for unsuspecting westerners to have drugs transporting unknowingly in their suitcases by dodgy baggage handlers etc.
