Plitvice Lakes can best be described as a paradise- there’s no exaggeration needed! From crystal clear blue seas and rushing waterfalls that belong on a postcard, Plitvice Lakes in Croatia is the ultimate fairytale destination. As one of Croatia’s most popular tourist destinations, Plitvice Lakes National Park is made up of sixteen lakes that are connected by a series of waterfalls and surrounded by picture-perfect woodlands.

These tips for visiting Plitvice Lakes in Croatia (along with plenty of photos) will spark your wanderlust and help you plan your own trip!

How do I get to Plitvice Lakes?

Plitvice Lakes National Park is located about halfway between Zagreb and Zadar. Both these cities are awesome places to visit, Zagreb being the capital of Croatia, and Zadar being a fun coastal city.

Driving to lakes from either of these cities will take almost an hour, and parking is available for 7 Kuna per car. There are also buses from Zagreb and Zadar which go directly to the lakes.

Most buses are air-conditioned in Croatia so this is a totally comfortable way to travel there!

How much time should I spend there?

The real question is, “how much time do you want to spend in paradise?” The hours fly by quickly when the birds are chirping and the water is flowing around you. The National Park is open all year round and access is available from 7 am to 8 pm daily. Complete operating hours and prices can be found here.

You can spend an entire day in the beauty of nature here. There are plenty of hiking trails as well as boardwalks that go over the lakes and waterways.

Walking across these will take your breath away as you glance down and see all the way to the bottom through the clear azure water.

Remember that swimming isn’t allowed at these lakes due to its UNESCO World Heritage listing. But that doesn’t mean that you won’t have an amazing day here. For another epic destination in Croatia where you can swim, check out Krka National Park!

Pack a picnic lunch, bring some music or a book to read, and set up camp for the day in your little patch of perfection in Croatia.

How much money should I bring?

The great thing about going anywhere in Croatia is that it won’t break the budget. You can have a beautiful and unforgettable experience while staying on the cheaper side.

For adults, the entrance fee is 55 Kuna ($8 USD) between January-March and November-December and rises to 110 Kuna ($16 USD) during April-June and September-October. The highest fee is in July and August when tickets are 180 Kuna ($26 USD).

Tickets for Plitvice can be purchased only in advance, at least 2 days prior to your arrival.

On top of that, make sure you have enough money to by some food from a café through the day and definitely have some Kuna set aside to buy an ice cream. It would be hard to find anything better than eating an ice cream while looking at these remarkable lakes and enjoying the blazingly bright Croatian sun!

      The most picturesque roads in Croatia have no road tolls which is confined to the highways so if you want the best coastal drive stick to the coast. It takes a little longer but is the most beautiful coastal drive ever. I am from Australia and have now visited Australia on numerous occasions as I I fell in love with the place on one of my European trips. It has everything a traveller could want. 1200 islands, numerous amazing coves and beaches, amazingly clear seas like I have never seen anywhere in the world and an indented and amazing coastline with the most amazing views. It also has mountains gushing straight out of the ocean and historical towns and cities to blow your mind and make you feel like you are in a medieval movie. One reader above said don’t just go to the top 10 places…. they are right Croatia has so many hidden treasures. I am going to give you 12 which I want you all to Google image and you will all thank me afterwards. 1. Town of Betina on the island of Murter and the surrounding Kornati archipelago 2. Town of Pucisca on the island of Brac, 3 Komiza on the island of Vis 4. Mali Losinj on the Island of Losinj, 5. island of Krk & Rab. 6.The gorgeous town of Sibenik , 7. gorgeous neighbouring towns of Primosten and Rogoznica . 8. Hilltop town of Motovun 9 beautiful village built on waterfalls of Rastoke 10. the baroque first capital of Croatia in Varazdin with a stop at one of Europe’s most beautiful castles in Trakoscan.11. Makarska Riviera 12. Town of Opatilja. As you can see the opportunities are endless and you essentially need a month in Croatia to soak in all its beauty. make sure to google these places listed and even better visit them as they will blow your mind

      Plitvice Lakes are the most beautiful in the fall, but there is also shorter daylight. It is also less crowded and easier to walk because it is not so hot, though it may be rainy days …

    It’s absolutely a splurge, but for such an intimate, once-in-a-lifetime experience (and knowing it supports conservation) felt incredibly worth it!

    If that’s not in budget, they also offer daily public visiting hours (around $20 per person), which are still really special.

    NOTE: You’ll also need to pay the Nairobi National Park entrance fee for any visit.

    It pairs perfectly with a safari drive in the park, since you’re already there. It’s such an easy and meaningful add-on to any Nairobi itinerary.

    A lush, water-filled oasis in the middle of the Kalahari, where the seasons quite literally shape the entire experience.

    Floodwaters arrive months after the rains fall in Angola, transforming the landscape into a maze of channels, islands, and wildlife-rich plains.

    We stayed at @aksanctuary Sanctuary Chief’s Camp on Chief’s Island — known as the predator capital of Botswana. Because it’s one of the only areas of permanent dry land, animals naturally gather here… which means some of the most incredible game viewing you can experience.

    What makes this place so special is the contrast. Early mornings tracking predators on game drives, and afternoons drifting through quiet waterways in a mokoro, surrounded by birds, reeds, and the kind of stillness you rarely find anymore.
