Hello! I’m a 19 year-old female considering going solo myself, and I just have a few questions if that’s ok!

There’s an awesome marine volunteer program in Kwa-Zulu Natal that I’m really interested in, and I’m not incredibly concerned with the safety of it after I arrive, but I am wondering about the journey there. I’d be flying from the US, and looking at different flights, I’m seeing long layovers (20 hours) in Johannesburg and potentially some other countries depending on the flights. What have your experiences been in those situations, and would you consider it especially dangerous?

Obviously, there’s risk travelling anywhere, but what I’m really trying to gauge is whether or not I’m putting myself in extremely high levels of danger by travelling there solo, and if it’d be a better idea to do a similar program in another location.

Any thoughts you have would be greatly appreciated 😀

    • I wouldn’t worry about a layover in Johannesburg. There’s a hotel at the airport if you aren’t comfortable leaving the area but Ubers are also cheap so you could definitely stay somewhere in town and explore a bit 🙂 Use your best judgment and I wouldn’t recommend walking around solo at night, but it’s a perfectly explorable city.
